i was told off for not updating my blog, so here i am, don't know what to write though.

the rumour has it that we're gonna get our dissertation grades this thursday, don't know if it's true. i think i'd rather not get it now. seriously, i don't know if i'll be able to look at it. and then again, i don't know if i'm able not to. oh well oh well.

it's been nice and sunny and warm again, had a picnic at victoria park on sunday. i wish i could just sit on the sun every day, forget about the financial problems and the huge amount of work i've still got to do before (and i keep forgetting - after) the hand in. tomorrow's the last chance for any catching up with the sun, as although we're having our easter holiday now, they're kind enough to keep the uni open for the rest of the week for third years.
to talk about cathing up, i've done some in the exhibiton scene. went to see the roni horn show in tate, annette messager and the one mark wallinger's curated in hayward gallery, and gerhard richter in national portrait gallery. not during the same day though! to put it shortly: i really really liked the richter show, didn't get much out of the wallinger show (i just didn't understand...), roni horn's (who happens to be one of my main references) show had some really interesting stuff in it, and some works were boring as hell.

i'll try to post some pics soon. i've been planning to for a long time, but then the pics get kind of old if i don't do it straight away and i get bored of them. but now i should have some new random stuff. bla bla.

So. The dissertation is done, and that's all about it for now. I need a rest from that.
I've been taking it easy after the hand in, well, kind of, at least I've been sleeping a lot more than in the past two weeks. I feel like going to the uni, but perhaps I should give myself a break, and not go before I have to next week. Went to see some exhibitions today (Katy Grannan at the Photographer's Gallery and Annie Leibowitz and the Taylor Wessing photographic portrait prize exhibitions at the National Portrait Gallery). I don't know what to make of Grannan's new work, they're bothering me. (Check here for example). Annie Leibowitz was Annie Leibowitz. What can I say? The exhibiton was good to see, but it felt poorly curated, like there was no structure, and I can't think of that many significant images now. Most of the portraits in the competition were crap... Or so basic stuff, that I'm really unimpressed. Some of the portraits in here.

I guess I haven't got that much to write as it feels like I've just woken up after a very, very long dream called dissertation (and a burn).
Oh yeah, that's another story. I've got a massive burn on my leg, and I've spent hours and hours and hours at the doctors. And I mean literally hours! I've been going to the walk in centre almost every single day since Friday the 16th to get the dressing changed, because they cancelled my appointment from my own GP and refused to give me any new appointments... so I've had to que every single time at the walk in centre at least for 40 minutes to get the 5 minute operation done. What a drag, I must say. The timing was perfect really with the D and all.
Oh well, at least it's healing now, slowly, but still. It's not as painful today as it's been and I don't have to go there before Friday again. Luckily I survive with a couple of permanent scars, it could've been so much worse.

Last year I wrote in the first entry that may the year 2008 be happier for all of us, and I can gladly discover that, at least for me, it was, even if it started badly.
I think the year 2009 will be a year of changes and new things. Just for starters I don't know were I'll be and live and what's going to happen after June.

On new year's eve we made lists of our year 2008 with some friends; Miikka, Roosa, Venda and Ilya. I'll give you some of them, anonymously though.

Other than that, I've been doing all sorts of other stuff and have had lots of fun lately, I think. I'm happy in London (I think I might've mentioned it couple of times before...). There would be so many things to do and see but not enough time and money.

We went to Erotica (it's like erotiikka-messut in Finland I guess, haven't seen that though) yesterday with my mate Tracy and had such a nice evening at the end, although the actual event was a bit boring. But we do bring out some serious girl power in each other. Let's see what will result from yesterday's state of mind...!
There was this photographer who walked up to me and asked if he could take my picture. I said yes (or actually Tracy replied for me when I was still thinking about it) and asked only afterwards (should I know better? what am I studying again?) that who's he shooting for, and it's for the Loaded magazine, ha ha, amazing. We'll see if I'm gonna appear in the next issue. And no, I wasn't walking around in my topless.

I had a nice night yesterday. The band was good and they had amazing energy on the stage. Afterwards we came back east and met Hugo, Johnny, Stripes, Mikko, Toby, Per and BeeKay in a pub, and stayed until late. Don't know about the others but I had fun, at least until someone broke a window (maybe they refused to give him a treat in the bar and that was his trick?) and I just got tired.
Then the usual journey home: first to the Beigel shop, then to the bus stop, wait there and see how 2 or 3 busses drive past and don't take anyone in. Sit and wait for a bit longer in the hope of another bus until you're freezing, start walking, then there's finally a bus when you're in between 2 stops and almost at home, run after the bus and then feel stupid after taking the packed bus smelling of puke for such a short journey.

Emo, a Pakistani girl whose final collection we shot with Naroa, sent us (among some other people from the Uni) a message telling that her wedding's going to be next year in September in Pakistan and we're invited! I really want to go. Better start saving money for the flight tickets...

It's snowing. I'm not kidding. It's quite odd. Mikko told me that there was thunder earlier on today.

Our bathroom is leaking. When I was leaving today and stepped outside I noticed this small pond of water next to our front door, looked up, and noticed a crack in the concrete, and there was water dripping down from the crack. Our bathroom's right above it.
And there's mould in Adam's room. It's growing bigger and bigger day by day. It only appeared last week and now 'cause it's been raining it's just out of hands.

Amazing amazing amazing.

I did have a happy moment today: I saw the fox again.
(One English guy said to me that I shouldn't like foxes, that they're just big rats.)

It's been a while!
Because I've been busybusybusy. And I still am; shouldn't be doing this now either. But I've been working hard today and yesterday so this can be my break. I'm going mental with my visual (already) but I guess I've always been like that with new projects. It just takes time before things start making sense.
I'm writing my dissertation about these Rineke Dijkstra's images, but I can't be asked to explain further just now as that's all I've been thinking for the past two days or more.

Aaaanyways. What else fits into my life now? Hmm. The teaching job has been good, although it's a pain travelling all the way to Barnes, and when I come back it's the rush hour, which means that the tube is packed and it's hot and annoying 'cause I can't even do anything surrounded with that many people. Oh well.
I'm a strict teacher btw... I don't get confused, or angry, easily at all though. I try to discuss about everything with them. I was warned about one of the children beforehand, that he's very restless and wild etc, but he's such a nice kid! He just needs to be kept busy and talked with and not ignored. And then the two boys of the group sometimes try to test me or shock me or something by mentioning or repeating the word pippeli (something like willy I guess), but if I start discussing about the matter with them, they get less enthusiastic.

Lessons I've learned in England part 123:

a) Things seldom go as planned. Especially when it comes to houses.

There's water running down from the base of our boiler. How is that possible - I do not know. Luckily I was still at home when it started, and not so luckily I'm now stuck in here, waiting for the plumber to come.

My blog has its birthday today. I cannot do anything else but smile when reading some of the first entries, writing about chavs etc.
I left to England two years ago for the very first time. Looking back at it I have to say that a lot of life fits into two years. I write so clearly as an outsider in the beginning but then at the end Chatham (/Rochester) actually became my home and I had so much fun, and ups and downs, there too. You get used to everything, but more importantly, you have to make the place your own (with the help of friends). It can take a while to realize.

I think it was the right decision to come to England, I'm happy I left. What would I have done in Finland anyways?

So we found an apartment. It's called Gilbert. (Or actually the building is).

We've (we as Adam and myself, Mikko's coming in a week's time) spent three nights there by now, and it's true what Adam said to me during the first evening: it was as we were in somebody else's house because it's - how should I put it - "decorated". We have some Monet, Mucha and Van Gogh on the walls, the furniture's just amazing in the bedrooms, not to mention the carpet... It's a very English house. I mean flat. When you walk in it feels like you'd be in a house though. It's in two floors etc.
The flat is already starting to feel a bit like home though, I'm quite sure I'll be so much happier there than in Kelly's eye.

I haven't got any pictures yet but I'll post some when I can. We haven't started in the Uni yet which means I have to wait until that to get my films developed.
We went to Uni and to Rochester-Chatham yesterday with Tiina and Adam and it felt so weird to be back there. It felt good and it felt bad, that's the only way how I can put it I guess. It feels so nice to live in London, and I dunno if I should say this but it sure feels good that I don't have to live in Medway anymore, although I know it's gonna be hard commuting there and I'm gonna be practically pennyless in London.

The reason why we went there is that we hired a van to move our stuff (5 addresses to pick up stuff from and 5 places to leave the stuff to in London...) After all that me, Tiina and Noora went to see Hercules & Love Affair in Koko in Camden. The same place where I went to see Roisin Murphy. It's a very nice looking place but I can't help thinking that Herkku would have been so much better in a club environment, everybody dancing etc.
I'm still knackered after yesterday's loooong day and waking up really early today to return the van. I should move my ass and go and do some shopping. We're missing some crucial stuff, like plates...

I've tried writing here for like 3 times at least. It's been so long since the last entry that I don't know where to start... I was very busy for a long time, many things have happened and still it feels like everything is just like it has been for the past year or so. Which isn't true of course.
Umm. Like I said, I don't know what to write. I'll try to start from the present moment.

As it happens, our landlord sued us. And we made a counterclaim. Interestingly enough our so called landlord isn't really our landlord and therefore he doesn't have a leg to stand on, or at least shouldn't have. He's name is not in any papers and he doesn't own the property either. This is a long (or shall I say never ending) story, but shortly said: the judges in Medway County Court are familiar with our "landlord", he's a proper con, but using the same tricks all the time. For example, he almost always rents the houses to foreign students... Same old tricks that seem to work well enough. There would be so much to write about. Why he's still able to be doing this to more and more people is that he's bankrupt so nobody gets money out of him, and also, it's not his name on the papers anymore.
Luckily I haven't bumped into him in this small town of ours, I don't know what would I do. Or maybe it would be good, but quite unlikely to happen though. I don't think he walks anywhere.
I'll tell the whole story when I get home.

I moved to my friend Tracy's house in Rochester for June, and it has been really nice living there with her. I have my porridge in the garden almost every morning. I'm still coming into the Uni every day. Technically I'm on holidays now and the term is over, but I'm using the facilities as long as I can.
It's cold more often than what it is warm, so it doesn't really feel like summer. I miss home and I sometimes, more and more often, get the feeling that what the hell am I still doing here... Oh well, there's something like 9 days left. And I'm not saying that it hasn't been good here, 'cause it has. It's strange that midsummer is almost here. We should come up with something. I guess it's going to be either a bbq in Chatham or picnic in London.

Oh yeah, I've finally decided to move to London in September. I'm not completely sure about who I'm moving with, but definitely with my brother Mikko, and Adam, who is graduating now from furniture design, and is the man behind titimadam (Tiina being the woman behind titimadam). Then there's been some discussion with Hugo and Tiina as well, but not sure at all about them yet.

I don't know how long I'll be staying in Finland, but at least for July, that's for sure. I'm totally broke, so I should probably come back here for August to work before I start the third year. I'm not happy about starting the third year, yet. I just feel like I'm not ready for that, I don't know what I want to write about or about my visual. Of course I'll come up with something, it just feels like it's too soon and too BIG.

Two shoots of three done, tired but happy. I didn't have any vappu this year though because of the shoots.

Narrative project is finally over and I've had the laziest weekend. Saturday felt like summer so we had the first terrace coffee this year in Art Centre. After that I made dinner fo me and Hugo which was a weekend tradition at some point but I can't remember when was the last time. Then I had Tracy coming over for a tea and later on I went to Rochester Street to watch Into the Wild with Erno, Hugo, Naroa and Toby. Nice film. It almost feels like I was never stressed about anything and that there's no worries in the world. But just almost. I feel slightly guilty because in reality there is plenty of things that I have been pushing aside because I was finishing the narrative project and now I really should start doing them.

Next week is going to be a busy week again. We're going to get a new brief tomorrow for the next project and the dissertation preparation starts too. That's so scary, I haven't got a clue what I'm going to write about. And because we haven't been feeling busy enough lately with Naroa (sometimes I get the feeling that I really don't think too far), we have 3 fashion shoots coming up like I wrote earlier. They're all for 3rd year fashion students, who need their final collections photographed.
Oh well, I guess it's all good, I'm here to take pictures after all, and not to sit on my ass.
